The Mahabharata is the lengthiest written epic in the world and is the greatest of all time. The Mahabharata is always remembered by the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Another name to remember is "Veda Vyasa"! Yes, he deserves credit for creating such a great poem and we are forever indebted to him. Besides the Mahabharata, he classified Vedas and Upanishads which is a boon to Hinduism.

Veda Vyasa is not just only a composer of the Mahabharata but has a pivotal role in Mahabharata story. At the behest of Vishnu, Vyasa was reborn to Satyavati and Rishi Parashara. It is believed that Vyasa was born with a duty of documenting the Vedic knowledge in a systemic manner. Vyasa was born on an island on the banks of the river Yamuna and because of his dark complexion, he was named Krishna Dwaipayana.

The Mahabharata dates back to about 9th to 8th century BC. And it is said to have been created by a Vyasa over a 3 year period. The story behind the formation of Mahabharata is exciting! It is said that the Mahabharata was narrated by the sage Vyasa and written by Lord Ganesha. The sage appealed to the Creator, Lord Brahma, to suggest a capable person who could write the epic of Mahabharata. Then Lord Brahma advised to meditate on Lord Ganesha and instructed him to bow down to him. Accordingly, Vyasa requested Ganesha and Ganesha agreed. But Cagy Ganesha makes a condition to check Vyasa as he knew that vyasa could easily create the epic without much efforts. He warned if Vyasa stops the narration for any reason then Ganesha will get rid of his act of writing the epic. In response, Vyasa states that if Ganesha writes down by understanding the stanza then he will agree to narrate the story with unstoppable. Ganesha agrees with that. Vyasa begins the narration. Occasionally Vyasa would produce a complicated stanza and within a few moments of Ganesha interpreting this, Vasya would have the opportunity to create the next stanza. Thus, with the wittiness of Vyasa and Ganesha Mahabharata was created in about 18 Parvas.
